Social Participation Skills

CRANK is a community of people who love gaming and digital media.

We stand for No Barriers – removing the things that stop you from having the life and career you deserve. We work with you to develop healthy social participation skills around your love of games, media and technology.

We help people with ASD, autism and psychosocial disorders harness their natural interests to foster essential life, work and study skills.

Confidence and Self-Advocacy

Through our programs and coaching, our CREW develop the confidence to express themselves clearly and assertively.

Our coaches help you build self-esteem, understand your unique abilities and advocate for your needs in various social settings. Social participation skills are super important in both personal relationships and future study and work scenarios.

Group Conversation Skills

No matter what we do, all of us have to learn the art of effective group communication – even if it’s a bit uncomfortable.

At CRANK, we practise active listening. We take turns to speak and respect the contributions of others. We encourage teamwork, empathy and inclusivity – creating an environment where everyone’s voice is heard.

Initiating Conversations

Breaking the ice and initiating conversations can be challenging, especially for people with autism. Our programs provide practical strategies and real life scenarios to start conversations confidently. We focus on topics of common interest, asking open-ended questions, sharing thoughts and engaging with others naturally.

In-Person Social Networking

The world is becoming more and more online, but in-person social interactions are still a fundamental part of building lasting relationships. We encourage CREW to explore and practise face-to-face socialising, in our programs or elsewhere. Things such as eye contact, non-verbal cues and respecting personal space are all things that get better the more you do them.

Social Gathering Participation

Social gatherings of more than a few people can be really intimidating, we get it. But like anything, developing core skills not only makes it easier, but even enjoyable! Before long, you’ll develop the confidence to navigate parties, excursions and gatherings like never before.

Behaviour Self-Management and Coping Strategies

Recognising and managing emotions and difficult feelings is tough for anyone, let alone those with ASD or psychosocial disorders. Sometimes it can feel impossible, but with the right techniques and support, big improvements can be made. Getting a handle on anxiety, frustration and sensory sensitivities can help make social situations much easier.

Sustaining Conversation Flow

Conversations can be easy or awkward. Sometimes, the more you think about it, the more awkward it gets, right?

There are some simple techniques anyone can use to keep discussions flowing. It’s a mixture of active listening, adding relevant comments and asking follow-up questions. Like any skill, social participation just get easier with practice.

Conflict Resolution

We’re all different and unique, which means some level of conflict is inevitable.

The key is to learn how to resolve conflicts quickly, before harm is caused. Things like learning to identify conflicts, express feelings constructively, respect our differences and work towards mutually beneficial solutions are all part of it.

Habits and Routines

Most humans benefit from some sort of routine to make handling life easier. Establishing positive habits in your own life supports social growth, provides stability and predictability, and helps to save your energy for when you need it most.

Dating and Relationships

Navigating the world of dating and relationships can be confusing. We can help develop capacity to better understand emotions, boundaries and consent. Effective communication with people in your life – including romantic partners – will help to ensure that any relationships you have will be founded on mutual respect.

E-Communication (Do's and Don'ts)

At CRANK we practise healthy online communication, emphasising the importance of kindness, respect and safety. All our CREW get the support to learn how to manage their online presence, avoid cyberbullying and engage in positive online interactions.

Handling Bullying

We all know that bullying is horrible – it’s never okay.

CRANK’s program equips you with strategies to recognise and respond to it effectively. This includes standing up for yourself, seeking help when needed and cultivating a trusted network of friends and allies.

We’ll help empower you to handle ugly situations with resilience.
